If you have an Android smartphone or tablet, chances are good an email app was probably pre-installed on your device when you got it. However, that generic email app may not have all the features you want, and there are dozens of email apps for Android in the Google Play Store to choose from. How do you know which is the best?
Weâve put together a list of the top mail apps for Android to help you figure out which one of these apps is best suited for your individual needs. Keep in mind, these apps are in no particular order, but each includes a list of what we like and donât like about the application.

Best Designed and Easiest to Set Up: Blue Mail
What We Like
The People Centric feature lets you focus your inbox on live conversations.
The well-designed interface is easy to navigate.
The Intelligent Counter feature enables a badge that shows all unread mail, or only new unread emails.
Features a nice preview that allows you to mark a message as Read or delete it without opening the app.
What We Don't Like
The app can be buggy, especially right after an update which could require that you uninstall and reinstall to solve the problem and restore functionality.
Blue Mail is a free, well-designed email app that offers tons of great features. It works with multiple email providers, including Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL, Outlook, and Microsoft 365 among others. It also offers support for IMAP, POP3, and Exchange, and it offers autoconfiguration. Setting up an account in Blue Mail is super simple. In our test, it took three taps to set up a Gmail account. Blue Mail also offers support for multiple email accounts.
Additional features include:
- A Dark theme that automatically changes from day to night modes.
- Easily configurable rich text signatures that allow for stylized text and images.
- Compatible with Android Wear.
- Customizable swipe menu and email view actions for easy email management.
- Mark emails to be handled later and set reminders so nothing gets lost in your inbox again. When youâre finished, mark the message as Done so you donât have to wonder if you replied to a message or just thought about replying.
- Easy to use email filters.

Expandable Functionality: Aqua Mail
What We Like
Easily select multiple emails by swiping down on the left side of the screen.
Intuitive, easy navigation.
Color-coded labeling makes organization a breeze.
Display for messages and message list is very customizable down to the size of the font and the color of the mail separators.
What We Don't Like
No calendar integration.
Many features are gated behind a âProâ license.
The free version includes advertisements.
Like many other Android email applications, Aqua Mail allows you to connect to multiple email services, including Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo Mail, Microsoft 365, and Exchange Mail. Aqua Mail is also easy to setup and is customizable, so users can make it their own.
Aqua Mail also integrates with numerous third-party add-ons, to extend the usability and functionality of the email service.
Additional features include:
- Customizable signatures that include stylized text and images.
- Integration with Android Wear smartwatches.
- Customizable themes.

Simple User Interface and Easy to Use: Nine Email and Calendar
What We Like
Automatic email setup for many email services, including Gmail, Office 365, Yahoo Mail, Exchange Online, and many others.
Includes Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes.
Supports Android Wear.
What We Don't Like
Automatic syncing doesnât always work well when roaming.
Not a free application. There is a two-week free trial after which time functionality is limited unless the user pays extra.
If what you want is an email application that has a good user interface, but is simple and easy to use, then Nine Email and Calendar might be the right choice. It has the most common features found in email applications, including a rich text editor, global email address, and includes calendar and contacts functionality, but there is nothing groundbreaking in this app. Itâs just simple, easy to use email.
Nine Email and Calendar does support multiple accounts and uses SSL security, but perhaps the most appealing feature of this email app for some users is that it is not cloud-based. Emails and account information are not stored in the cloud, they are stored on your device, which means you never have to worry about a cloud-based security breach over which you have no control.

Best for Multiple Email Accounts: All Email Access
What We Like
Can access multiple mail services from one app.
Access to many email providers through the app that are not available on most other email apps.
Smart Caller ID is a nice add-on feature that works in real-time.
What We Don't Like
Itâs not easy to select an All Email Access account for email when sharing something from your device or the web.
The user interface is a little clunky.
If you have multiple email addresses from multiple email service providers, All Email Access is the app that you need. This app is compatible with more than 50 email providers and lets you integrate all of your email accounts into a single app, but it doesnât do it beautifully. Itâs functional, though, and the added Caller ID feature that integrates with mail is a useful tool when you need to access mail options from the caller ID screen.

Excellent Email Encryption: ProtonMail
What We Like
The ability to send encrypted emails to anyone and auto-encryption for sending mail to other Proton Mail users.
Expiring messages that put a time limit on how long sensitive information is available for message recipients to review.
Customizable Swipe gestures that allow you to decide how you want to manage email with a single swipe.
What We Don't Like
Some features are hidden behind the Pro license.
Storage for the free account is limited to 500MB, with the option to purchase more.
If you deal with sensitive information in your email, then email encryption is a must. ProtonMail is one of the best known, and most trusted encrypted email service providers. The free account allows users to have one email address and send up to 150 encrypted emails per day. For most users, thatâs sufficient, but if youâre a power user, it might not be enough.
Mail recipients do not have to be ProtonMail members to receive and decrypt emails, and the encryption process is a simple one. Only users who have the password you provide can open encrypted emails.

Super Strong Encryption: Tutanota
What We Like
Encryption is automatically enabled for each message you send, but you can disable it if itâs not needed.
Emails that are sent without encryption are still stored encrypted on the Tutanota servers.
Even attachments are automatically encrypted unless encryption is disabled.
What We Don't Like
Cannot attach files in bulk, each file must be chosen and attached separately.
Does not sync with other mail services.
Some features are hidden behind a license fee that will cost users extra.
Tutanota is another encrypted email service. It doesnât sync with existing email accounts, but you can use this email account to send encrypted emails, or you can disable the encryption for messages that are not sensitive. One very nice feature of Tutanota is the required password necessary to set the application up on your Android device. Unlike other mail providers, Tutanota requires users to create a strong password in order to complete the account setup. So, thereâs never any concern that someone might accidentally let the bad guys through the door with a weak password.
As with other encrypted email accounts, email recipients do not have to be Tutanota users to have access to messages you send. As long as the recipient has the password you determine for the message, they can access it from the web interface.
The free account includes 1GB of storage (not expandable) and allows one user for the account. Free account users also have limited search capabilities. Aliases, inbox rules and filters, and unlimited search are available to customers that pay for a Tutanota license.

Built for Android: Gmail
What We Like
Easily import mail from other accounts, and send mail from Gmail as if youâre using a different account.
Undo feature lets you unsend emails or undelete messages.
Excellent search options, including advanced options and search operators to help you quickly find messages.
15GB of storage means you never have to think about how many emails you have archived.
Easily customizable rules.
An excellent spam filter.
What We Don't Like
Regular changes and updates to the Gmail user interface can leave users fatigued at constantly learning new features.
Because Gmail is a Google app, some users have privacy concerns associated with the depth of user information Google collects.
Advertisements, though well-designed, are increasingly more present in Gmail.
Gmail is the most frequently used email app with Android devices, and for good reason. Gmail works beautifully with Android, and itâs completely free. It is also integrated with other Google services, which work well on Android devices and is simple to add multiple Gmail accounts to one device.
For users with multiple email accounts, Gmail is compatible with services like Outlook.com and Yahoo Mail, or other IMAP or POP email accounts.
Additional features include:
- The Gmail Offline feature allows you to access emails and queue up emails to send when the app is back online.
- Integrates with Google Calendar and Google Tasks, which makes being productive and organized easier.
- Easily configurable auto-responder.
- Customizable themes.
- Integration with Google Pay.
